Hello Lisa! Stuart loved your comment and asked me to post this reply:

What a thrill to hear that you are using my book, Percy Plays It Safe, with children who are on the Autism Spectrum. I am often asked if my books are used by children with special needs. My response is always, "I sure hope so!" The fact that I include visual models within the text and that the learning takes place within the context of a real-life-like story are meant to engage all children. I think that these features, visually highlighting the skill and showing how it works, can be especially helpful to children who face learning challenges.

I am compelled by your notion of "perspective taking." I was in a meeting last night that could have benefited from some of that! With regard to children, and especially those with autism, I can just imagine the power of that concept.

What a nice belated birthday present!

Thanks, Stuart

Today I am using Percy Plays it Safe in my social skills group that I teach for first and second graders who are on the Autism Spectrum, and have other social skill deficits. I found your books via Happy Birthday Author, and I love them! Thank you for this wonderful resource! We are going to talk about playground rules, read about how Percy handles himself on the playground, and then predict what the other characters were feeling and thinking while Percy was having trouble on the playground. The concept of perspective taking is very difficult for my students, but this book lends itself to it perfectly! Thank you!

Thank you so much for this honor! I truly appreciate all the kind words. My children had a great time reading all of Stuart's books this week. We loved reading his birthday message too. It was so full of enthusiasm!

Today has been a great day!

Hi Janet,
Wonderful writeup. Please change the one mistake you made. I am the current CIO (Chief Information Officer) & Computer Teacher at Storefront, not the founder. The school was founded by Ned O'Gorman in 1966. This is all public on the web site of www.thechildrensstorefront.org and I would hate to have this mistake on a public site. Steve (also sbergen@cstorefront.org)

Hi Nick,

Well you made my day on on kinds of fronts. Always delightful to hear from you and both Stuart and I look forward to hearing tales of Canada! 'ril sooner than later, I hope... (btw, Stuart's going to be speaking at AASL (school librarians—I think that's the right acronym...), so we've finally followed your long-ago suggestion... grazie mille...)

Wow, Janet. This is a marvelous recap. I was wondering about this (not one of 5,000 watching, but did think about it). Thanks for so clearly covering this. How great that you got to attend! (And rallied in Wisconsin, too.) I'll save and devour this thoughtful post over the next few days. Best, and thanks!

Wow! Thanks, Melissa! Both Stuart and I are traveling (he's in China*), but as soon as I have a chance, I'm going to take a good long look. What a lovely way to start the day.

Many thanks...
